International Day of Peace : Fight the Common Enemy

In the international world, for realism, there can be no such thing as world peace. Why so? Because in truth, the state is like individuals who have their interests. Debates, disputes, and even enmity will be very difficult to avoid when talking about interests. Even so, calls for peace have never stopped being intensified by various parties including the state, international organizations, NGOs, and even civil society groups. Therefore, the United Nations has set September 21 as the International Day of Peace.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. The United Nations invites all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities during the Day and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace. With the commemoration of this world peace day, some hopes will continue to grow in the international order. The view on the day of peace invites world citizens to interpret differences in interests as a gap to create peace, namely by filling in each other’s void, not overthrowing one another. The theme raised by the United Nation this year is “Shaping the Peace Together”. Once again, every year peace movements were launched.

Talking about the relationship between the theme of the 2020 international day of peace and what the world is experiencing now, one straight line can be drawn. Since the end of 2019 until now, almost all countries in the world have been overwhelmed by the problems surrounding the spread of the coronavirus. Like a “common enemy”, the coronavirus has become an invisible enemy that all countries want to bring down without exception. Not without reason, this virus causes many problems in various sectors in affected countries such as in the health, economy, education, and many more sectors. All countries both large and small have fallen, without exception. Sounds bad right? But look at the other side. With the existence of this coronavirus pandemic, it seems that the countries in the world are one step closer to the word peace, even though in reality these words are still very far from being achieved. The existence of common interests, obstacles, and state concentration due to this pandemic has resulted in a lot of cooperation between nations in various sectors, especially health and the economy. The world needs countries to hold hands and get back on their feet against the invisible enemy, the coronavirus.
